Serving from Strength.
In John 13 we read the amazing account of Jesus washing his disciples feet. the significance of this service can be seen in Peter’s shocked reaction “Lord are you washing my feet?” vs6. As I read this account again I was taken by a small phrase in verse 3 “Jesus knowing that the father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going to God.”
Jesus was about to face the greatest battle in history, the focus of his life on earth – the Cross. This was the night before his betrayal, torture and cruel execution. He was about to conquer death and hell and buy for all people salvation, yet he approached this battle from the perspective of victory. It was already won.
This confidence allowed him to serve not as a victim but as the victor. It has been said that a big man can fulfill a small task but a small man can never complete a big task. Jesus as the ultimate conqueror was in a position to serve without reservation because he knew his position in God, totally secure in who he was and what was about to happen.
Ephesians 2 reminds us that we are seated with Christ in heavenly places Eph 2:6, in him we are more than conquerors Rom 8:37. These truths give us confidence as we face challenge and release us to serve without reservation. Because greatness is serving.
Mark 10:44-45 (NKJV)
44And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Yours in Him
